Utilizing some of the same Hollywood FX crew that transformed Eddie Murphy into the obese Klump family of The Nutty Professor 2, thin-as-a-rail Hong Kong pop stars Andy Lau and Sammi Cheng bulk up for Johnnie To and Wai Ka-Fai’s politically incorrect tale of two people attempting to lose 200 pounds in six months. One thing’s for sure: America’s not the only country with a body image complex. Pulling out every cliché in the book (Fat people steal other people’s food! Fat people dream about eating!), the movie starts out reinforcing the misconception that people need to be thin to be happy and never lets up. Lau and Cheng try their best underneath pounds of latex and a two dimensional script, but have few chances to display the chemistry that made them such a compelling screen couple in 2000’s office romance Needing You. Less successful as a romantic comedy than as a peek into a culture which is even more obsessed with being slim than our own.
