Riley Yip directs four of Hong Kong’s pop star flavors of the month in this treacly sweet tale of first love in late 60’s era Cheung Chau. Shawn Yue and Wong You-Nam star as mischievous but well-meaning teenagers selling sugar cane outside the local movie house. Cribbing from Cinema Paradiso, Yip intercuts clips from local romance and martial arts films of the day, as the boys meet and fall in love with Gillian Chung and Charlene Choi of the pop duo Twins. The leads do a good enough job of walking and talking at the same time, but the meandering story gives no real payoff to the characters and relationships it’s spent so much time (almost) developing. Amid these newcomers, veteran actor Anthony Wong is a welcome presence as the man who may or may not have killed Yu’s father, but has too little screen time to really save the movie as a whole.
